What’s Coins, Tokens, and Altcoins?
Coins, Tokens, and Altcoins are the three main types of cryptocurrencies
What differentiate coins, tokens and altocoins is their use cases and the technology they are based on.
Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency coin because of its use as transfer of value.
If you were asked that what is the usefulness of Bitcoin it’s only usefulness is Transfer of Value
You know I keep shouting this any Cryptocurrency without real-time usefulness is a lie.
Now to tokens, what are tokens???
Tokens are created on existing blockchains. Meaning they don’t have their Blockchain but they are built on other Blockchain that are already created.
When you hear people talk about smart contracts in the real sense, not all these Ponzi schemes calling their fake schemes smart Contracts. Smart contracts come as a result of building projects on the existing Blockchain. The most common blockchain token platform is Ethereum. Tokens that are built on the Ethereum platform are known as ERC-20 tokens.
There are lots of Blockchains that tokens can be built upon such as *NEO, Waves, Lisk, and Stratis and so on.
While, as mentioned above, tokens on the Ethereum platform are known as ERC-20 tokens, NEO uses tokens known as NEP-5 tokens.
So next time someone come to you that their ponzi referral business is a smart contract ask the person to let you their contract address or block address where their project is built on.
Please note that it is very important to remember that fees need to be paid with the native coin of the blockchain used e.g ether for projects on Ether Blockchain for all token transactions on a blockchain, not just the creation of the token. Therefore, any application built on Ethereum must use Ether coins to transfer the application- specific tokens from one user to another or between the app and the user.
Recently when you want to buy or swap tokens such SAFEMOON, SAFEMARS and others you are asked to click DApps. What is DApps? Decentralized Applications
Most tokens exist to be used with decentralized applications, or dApps.
When developers or project owners are creating their token, they can decide how many units they want to make and where these new tokens will be sent when they are created. They will pay some of the native cryptocurrency on the blockchain they are creating the token on at this point.
Tokens are are often used to activate features of the application they were designed for.
E.g Binance (the exchange) also has its own token. When users trade with BNB (Binance token), their fees are 50% less and thats why everyone prefer Binance Smart Contracts called Binance SmartChain(BSC) because it’s fees are low compared to ERC20 Smart Contracts
Also some tokens are created for a whole different kind of purpose: to represent a physical thing.
For example if you want to sell lands on smart contracts you can put land there but you create a token to represent that land you want to sell. May be (LandToken) LT so when people have maybe 10 units of LT it mean they have a plot of land of in your estate.
Binance don’t list most tokens project very fast like other exchange platform to secure it’s users from scams and this leads us to my next tip because this give smart people chance to buy into popular projects with the potential to be listed on Binance before it is listed.

What are Altcoins? They are alternative coins to Bitcoin, They started with Bitcoin’s code but modified it to a significant extent.
There are different types of coins, each with its use cases and strengths.
